Share: News From The Pacific

The Pacific25,000 islands scattered over 88 million square kilometers. One continent (Australia). Two large land masses (New Zealand and Papua New Guinea). And 26 smaller island nations and territories. 1,238 different ethnolinguistic peoples. 1,362 different languages.

The Pacific was one of the first regions in the world to be evangelized in the modern missionary era. Whole peoples and islands have been brought to Christ. As a result, 15.2% of the population in the Pacific region is evangelical (Johnstone, Patrick and Mandryk, Jason. 2005. Operation World, 21st Century Edition. Milton Keynes, United Kingdom: Authentic Lifestyle).

Now, thanks to modern technology, we have a unique opportunity to create a collaborative record of God's work in The Pacific.

Together, let's marvel at what the Lord has done and will do in the Pacific region. "All the earth will worship You, and will sing praises to You; they will sing praises to Your name. Come and see the works of God, who is awesome in His deeds towards the sons of men." Psalm 66:4-5).

Our hope is that this section of our website will become a venue where long-term missionaries, short-term missions teams, missions agencies, missions pastors, and believers with a heart for world missions can gather and discuss God's plan and desires for the peoples of the Pacific region, encourage one another, share stories and prayer requests, etc. If you have a story or prayer request about the Pacific that you would like to share, please select a country from the Destinations menu at right. Each country-specific page will give you an opportunity to share your own story or prayer request with the other members and visitors to this website.

You must be a registered member of our site to submit a news story or prayer request, but don't worry — registration is free!

Betelnut issues

News from guamguam

Betelnut is a major issue out here in the middle of the Pacific and throughout Asia. It’s the ubiquitous nut that grows wild in tropical climates (we have some on the property where we’re currently living). Some of the most potent betelnut comes from Yap. So the mom and pop village stores sell “Yapese Betelnut.”

It’s a mild stimulant and intoxicant when chewed and on some islands it’s the center of social life.

About the Author:
I (Brad) define my purpose as helping people make vital connections and as facilitating growth in the lives of individuals and the church. Cheryl and I are Covenant Project Missionaries helping with the development of pastors and leaders for the churches in Micronesia and the Western Pacific. We serve in partnership with Pacific Islands Bible College and Liebenzell in Guam, where I teach and coordinate distance education. I am an ordained minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church with a special interest in Christian leadership formation, helping to start new churches, and in the revitalization of older congregations. Before this current assignment I spent 22 years pastoring churches in Turlock, California; Bedford, Texas; and Selah, Washington.
